Favourite film this time last year

Synopsis
When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge’s intentions of driving off the native humanoid “Na’vi” in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na’vi people with the use of an “avatar” identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand – and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

Why this was my favourite film this time last year?
Although the story is not perfect it suits the movie very well. In fact a more detailed story may well detract from the experience given the heavy reliance on the special effects, especially when viewing the 3D presentation. It is a shining example of where 3D movies should strive for, at this point in time though nothing has ascended to the heights of this movie.

Favourite movie as a kid

Synopsis
Fleeing the evil Galactic Empire, the rebels abandon their new base on Hoth. Princess Leia, Han Solo and the droid C-3P0 escape in the damaged Millenium Falcon, but are later captured by Lord Darth Vader on Bespin. Skywalker and the droid R2-D2, meanwhile, follows Ben Kenobi’s posthumous command and receives Jedi training by Yoda on Dagobah. Will Skywalker manage to rescue his friends from the dark lord?

Why this was my favourite film as a kid?
The force is strong, especially as a kid.  Not that I have changed much, sword battles and aircraft attacks still rank very high for enjoyment.

Most obscure film

Synopsis
Joe comes from Iowa to New York and, being short of money, wants to find an apartment with very low rent. His quest is successful, but he must share the residence with some 50,000 cockroaches. The insects turn out to be Joe’s best friends.

Why this is my favourite independent film?
Any movie involving cockroaches is destined to obscurity. This though is funny with the all singing and dancing cockroaches providing the entertainment.

Synopsis
The disappearance of a magical jade sword spurs a breathtaking quest for the missing treasure. Li is embittered by the loss of his jade sword, and his unrequited pursuit of Yu is further complicated by the mysterious intrusion of an assassin. The identity of the assassin is gradually unveiled as another poignant tale of love begins to ravel with that of Li and Yu against the backdrop of Western China’s magnificent landscape.

Why this is my favourite independent film?
Great movie around a failed heist. Full of names and Tarantino’s directorship, can not go too wrong.
