A film I loved but now hate

A film I loved but now hate

Synopsis
A former rock star, Johnny Boz, is brutally killed during sex, and the case is assigned to detective Nick Curran of the SFPD. During the investigation, Nick meets Catherine Tramell, a crime novelist who was Boz’s girlfriend when he died. Catherine proves to be a very clever and manipulative woman, and though Nick is more or less convinced that she murdered Boz, he is unable to find any evidence. Later, when Nilsen, Nick’s rival in the police, is killed, Nick suspects of Catherine’s involvement in it. He then starts to play a dangerous lust-filled mind game with Catherine to nail her, but as their relationship progresses, the body count rises and contradicting evidences force Nick to start questioning his own suspicions about Catherine’s guilt.

Why I now hate this movie?
The lure of Sharon Stone flashing her groin whilst uncrossing her legs no longer covers up the thin story line and bad acting.

Synopsis
This sweet romantic comedy reunites “Sleepless In Seattle” stars Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. He’s the owner of a bookstore chain; she’s the woman he falls for online. Both are unaware that she runs the little shop his company is trying to shut down.

Why does this depict my life?
Whilst I was tempted to answer this with Bad Boy Bubby, Taxi Driver or The Shining for laughs I have to choose You’ve Got Mail. Reason is that I found my dream girl over the internet and have moved cross country to be with her. The other storyline bits have nothing in common with my life.

The film that no one expected you to like

The film that no one expected you to like

Synopsis
High-flying, adored! The film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical depicting the infamous real-life story of Eva “Evita” Duarte de Peron, the wife of President Juan Peron, who rose from poverty to become the most famous Argentine woman in history. Her huge political influence and constant charity works earned her scorn and fear from the military and upper classes but adoration and love from the workers and descamisados. Evita’s legendary life is displayed before your eyes as the most hated and most beloved woman in Argentina.

Why do I like this movie?
For the second category running I am left with a musical. Even more curious is that this one stars Madonna who I do not rate as an actress. This movie though her acting was fine and the songs good, and perhaps that is why Madonna works as it is more singing than acting.

A guilty pleasure

A guilty pleasure

Synopsis
It’s the weird and wonderful as newly engaged couple Brad and Janet encounter a problem when they car halts in the rain. They both look for contact only to find themselves at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter a transvestite. A place to stay is offered, but will Brad and Janet want to remain there? Especially when a large group of Transylvanians dance to the ‘Time Warp’, Dr. Frank-N-Furter builds his own man and a whole host of participation for the audience to enjoy.

Why do I like this movie?
I am a relative new comer to this movie with only having seen it for the first time within the past 5 years. It though appeals to me for some reason, not that I have any intention of turning into a transvestite. I am also not generally into musicals, but this movie hits the spot for some reason. When it comes down to the core it is a cult movie where you either love or hate the movie with little to no room for in the middle.

I have always had a soft spot for the Nikita story. Basically there are a number of ways this story has been told. From the movie Nikita, to La Femme Nikita in the 90′s and now the current Nikita story.

In the movie anf the previous series the focus was solely upon Nikita. Nikita is a lost soul from the streets that Division have identified as a candidate for spy work, chiefly as there is noone to remember them if they are killed. Basically the recruits are trained and brainwashed in the Division way, no deviation is allowed,

During her training Nikita is identified as a very capable recruit and is given the premier jobs. Along the way Nikita reconnects with her own story and develops a conscience. She becomes vengeful once her lover is murdered by Division, at this time she escapes from the system and goes rogue.

This is where the current telling picks up. The current series known simply as Nikita follows her attempts at striking back againat Division, in particular it’s evil mastermind Percy. In this telling, Nikita has performed some of her own recruiting and has joined forces witha girl named Alex, whose parents were executed by Division in a mission that Nikita was involved in.

Nikita has trained Alex in a number of Division techniques and her own. Nikita has then positioned Alex in a way that Division take Alex as a recruit. Alex is thus perfectly positioned as an inside informant for Nikita. This is where so e of my concerns with the series begin.

The main method of communication between Alex and Nikita is via the internet over a chat session. This seems totally contrary to the measures that Division take to ensure the recruits do not have a grounding in the putside world. I mean, if they can get onto Google they may aswell live amongst us. This in turn means the brainwashing could not possibly work.

Granted the only person we see successfully communicating in this manner is Alex to Nikita with apparent encryption, it should be impossible without detection of an outgoing packet.

Further, we have seen Alex use a public telephone o contact Nikita. Supposedly Alex has a tracking device embedded, however Division did not check records or attempt a phone trace. Again contrary to the premise that they are evil and technically diligent. This is also an action that would have happened in La Femme Nikita, which was more polished than the current telling.

These are the main things that sadly detract from this telling of the current Nikita story, and in my eyes keep it inferior to La Femme Nikita. Continuity and believability is part of the Nikita mythos, and this show tinkers with their outer limits. I wish they would close the gaps as it would greatly enhance an already enjoyable action packed show.
