Drip Spikes Mark 2
Well I have mixed feelings about the drip spikes now. Seems they get clogged very easily with the normal grit in the pots and this prevents the water from being applied to the plants. I am going to persist with them as I feel that when they work they work well. However, this is an intrinsic design flaw worth sharing with everyone.
My mind is contemplating strategies to overcome this problem, and one that immediately comes to mind is to get some PVC piping the width, and length, of the spike and sit the spike inside the tube. This will keep the soil away from the spike, thus it should not become clogged as easily as appears to occur now. Further, it still delivers the H2O directly to the plants root zone. Sounds like a trip to the The Big Kids Toy Shop is on the cards.
Actually, it will be a bit of an adventure visiting Bunnings Warehouse down here. All the ones I have seen look absolutely huge and I have not set foot in any of them. Definately time to correct that over the weekend me thinks. I need some more RichGro Pro Mix at any rate.

Or you could just wrap them in a piece of window screening.

Strange, I have never seen a drip spike. I use drippers but these work above the plant and as they never clog I may stick with these, even though the spikes may deliver directly to the roots I find that the water from normal drippers permeates through potting mixture quite easily anyway.

Our drip spikes - 2 diff brands- always clog with dirt, we’re forever bashing them to get the soil out every couple of days. Will be interested to see if the pipe idea works !

I have to confess I have never seen a drip spike either. I would be interested in checking them out, and from what you all are saying they need some design modifications. Listen up all inventors out there!

Thanks for the info on the drip spikes. I’ve been thinking about using them but wondered how effective they are. But a problem like the clogging wouldn’t deter me if all it takes is a little ingenuity in modification. I’ll have to give them a try and see for myself I suppose.

I will admit that my curiosity has been peaked. Were you able to resolve your issue with the drip spikes? How did it go? Did the PVC pipe work or did you find you needed to go another direction?

Pleased to find the drip spike was not some reference to winning at World of Warcraft - a fair suspicion, given this blog is devoted to “geekdom” as well as gardening. I am reading around gardening-keen blogs to get ideas for how to cultivate some life on my inner-city balcony. Our host Shadowknight has plenty of persistence and practical ideas to share. Ta.

I’ve been seeing glass globe drip spikes advertised on television recently. Have you tried these, or even heard of ‘em?
Here is a version from Target.com… the ones on t.v. look similar but slightly different shaped with brighter colors to chose from.

I have never had any luck with drip spikes. Everytime I try to use them they just get clogged which keeps them from doing their job. So frustrating.

There is a NEW single regulated watering spike out there which doesn’t clogged. From Wise Wally products.
It has a tip to regulate the flow, which means you can turn spike into a drip feed via twist action.
To clean all you need to do is unscrew tip and wash away.
I find them great to reduce water consumption and evaporation, great to use with liquid fertiliser. I also find it reduces weed growth.
K-mart along with M10 sell the product. Not sure about Bunnings.
