The “U Comment, I Follow” Revolution

Recently I became aware that the default installation of WordPress marks all comment links with the rel=’nofollow’ tag. The effect of this tag is that search engine spiders such as GoogleBot will not follow the link to your site, thus the only effect of the comment is if a human follows the link.

The origins of the nofollow tag are steeped in the early days of blogging where spammers were common place, and spam control mechanisms were not. The nofollow thus presented the nefarious activities of the spammer resulting in a profit from the increased sales of whatever product they were pushing.

In the current day however there are multiple spam control options available to combat this disgraceful activity. In fact one is shipped with WordPress by default in akismet. They are very effective and constantly updated. They are not faultless so the blog administrator should review all comments. However, the amount of illegitimate spam is vastly reduced. As a result the nofollow tag is less a legitimate spam control mechanism.

Given the effects of the spam control mechanisms I believe that commenters should be rewarded for their commentary. So I thought I would check the WordPress Dashboard and look for a simple toggle option for enabling/disabling the tag. Unfortunately, it is not a natively user configurable option. I hope that makes it into WordPress 2.5.

As such I have over the previous few days been investigating ways to remove the nofollow tag from comments. After a brief Google search I found the dofollow plugin by Kimmo Suominen. The plugin is highly configurable, but as mentioned earlier an administrator should still check comments regularly to ensure they are relevant and are not some clever spam.

I also found a complimentary plugin called CommentLuv. This plugin will interrogate the supplied URL and if possible retrieve the commenters last blog and place a direct deep nofollow free backlink to it. In this way other blog commenters will see potentially interesting content and visit. Further, search robots will also follow the link to the post.

With these natural advantages I decided to display that SCHWOIT is a proud believer in the I Follow Movement. Again looking at the fiddyp site I found the fast friends follow fair comments post. I liked the design and so decided to integrate it with my design. It is displayed in the header floating over the Bird Of Paradise leaf.

I am a proud member of this movement and encourage all bloggers to embrace the movement.

Very nice information. Thanks for this.

  2. This tag does help in search engine ranking spam. There are people who perform negative link building like promoting adult, gambling, malware etc websites. There are those who legitimately do it. Still the moderators have the true power.

    Regards

I use the dofollow and commentluv plug-ins, too and agree that it is silly for WordPress to make nofollow a part of the underlying code. I have found that it helps to start with an SEO friendly template, too. I have a dental marketing internet website and with a good template to begin with, got it up and running and towards the top of SERPs in no time.

  8. We’ve been using keyword luv for a while and it’s served us well – we’re getting more traffic and a whole lot more money!

  9. Thanks for sharing – having tried and implemented them,I think both commentluv and keywordluv are great for bloggers and commenters – Its also a great way to improve your brand too. The nofollow attribute still serves as an anchor to your site with no Search benefits.

  14. Hi ,
There are people who perform negative link building like promoting adult, gambling, etc websites.
    Well its a nice blog.
    Thanks for sharing information.

  15. The commentluv and keywordluv are the great plug-in.They brings lot of traffics on the blog and reward the commentator by extra link and also allow the keyword in the name field.

  16. One of the more outstanding ideas someone has come up with – really in my eyes, when you have visitors writing well thought, and knowledgeable responses to articles, they too deserve some credibility – thanks!

  17. DoFollow and NoFollow have been very confusing for me. Somehow, your post has been able to set me straight and I thank you very sincerely for that. Now that I understand it conceptually, I think I’ll start implementing.

  18. Was a good read. thank great post, I think this article is useful. I’ll be back for more. Thanks for sharing the information . .. :)

  21. I just went do-follow on my blog. I’m a total believer and can’t figure out why WordPress went no-follow. I use Aksimet to limit spam and moderate every post. I’ve seen no more spam since going do-follow. I use the Lucia’s Linky Love plugin and it not only does the do-follow but also limits spam.

  22. Bai Zijain says:

Great post on the dofollow and no follow links. I sure would support this movement to have follow links enabled on the blog.

Thanks a lot for this post.

  23. fwisp says:

CommentLuv for WP is a very nice plug-in. Every blog should have this installed and enabled by default; it would allow much better traffic exchange between websites! And the developer should definitely consider expanding the compatibility to other CMS.

  24. Larry C. says:

theres also a plugin called dofollow that does the same thing as commentluv….come by and share some of my luv… :)

  25. Do Follow says:

I’m a big dofollow fan as well,i even made a do follow blog list with blogs by pagerank and i encourage all my readers to post useful comments on them.

  26. Yeah I still think few people still don’t know that their blogs are nofollow by default, I’ve turned my blog into a dofollow one on blogger. WordPress dofollow plugin rocks and alongwith CommentLuv and KeywordLuv also works awesome. I love it. Thanks for being a part of a dofollow movement.

  27. joel says:

I too support the “U comment I follow” movement because it has helped one of my blogs to get good traffic and thus a decent PR. Enabling the comments on the blog to dofollow will help both the bloggers and the readers. Visitors to the site will be increased resulting in great traffic. It is nice that you made your blog dofollow.
    Keep posting.

  28. I think it is just wrong to allow people to add content to your website and have no paypack in some way,The no follw tag is default but if you are smart you can add a plug in that allows follow with wordpress.

  29. I agree about the spam control mechanisms in wordpress

  30. christian says:

when i move in to wordpress from blogspot i was bombarded with you many spam comment i have to enable an anti spam comment ,,i believe in making your blog dofollw one to rewards your readers and looking forward to making it

  31. Viva la revolution !:)
I also embrace this movement, and encourage others to do the same.

  32. Spammers are terrible. People who write good comments or articles should not be sanctioned. My opinion is that there is an exchange of content, just the network that represents the Internet. It should also be cross country. All users are a community. WordPress and its plugins has done a lot to the fact that everyone a can open a blog without any prior knowledge. You have to bring any special technical requirements. Pages such as this also help in a great way to understand the relationships and to learn, even the ordinary behavior. This is just my humble opinion.

  33. Its tough to find these “do follow” blogs, but I sure am glad some of us have figured it out! Thank you for the site.

  34. This is a great plugin that rewards active contributors to your blog. Just beware of increased spam.

  35. Art says:

These plugins work very well. I use them throughout all my sites and they do help to keep fresh content coming into my website. One thing that kind of slowed me down at first was broken links. I use WordPress and found that overtime websites disappear and you end up with URLs in old comments that are not relevant anymore. What I did to fix this problem is to install a plugin call “Broken Link Checker”. Do a quick search through WordPress. It is a easy download and install. It work for the issue I was having. Now all I do is take a look at my dashboard and within minutes I can clear all dead url links from my site. It does not remove the text or comment, just the dead link that may cause some trouble with Google. Thanks for the post. It was a very good read.

  36. I don’t have a blog but i like the idea behind it. Thanks for the solution.

  37. Great post on this do follow blog, you know how to set for no follow on my blog?

  38. Orthodontic says:

Thanks for this great information very essential from SEO point of view.No follow are just waste of times.DoFollow are best way to get huge traffic on your site.I never use U comment but I think it is also very useful to get back links to your site.

  43. Hi, its nice to see you taking part in do follow movement. It is really one of the best movement I have ever seen in bloggosphere. Apart from that you have rightly mentioned that comment spam has encouraged because of this movement but comment moderisation can solve this problem.

  44. Comment Luv is really useful, SEO just gets more and more sophisticated sometimes I believe it should be more content orientated what do you guys think?

  45. I guess dofollow links pass G PR

  47. It’s interesting that blogs first started out as a way for people to express their opinions on their chosen subjects (at least that’s what I thought), but now it has turned into a networking tool with this dofollow and nofollow debate.
But I guess business is business, and I’ll go with dofollow.

  48. Thanks for the plugins and the ‘luv’. I think that more people should be embracing this movement, provided they’re not just getting some random spammy comments. It can be a good thing to help others get the same traffic that you’re getting, a bit of give and take can help a lot more people get great results for their site.

  49. I am A relatively New to the whole blogging Idea And I Just wanted to thank you for an awesome post.. loving the content of your site. Keep up the good work!!
