Windows Vista Security Model Lame
I have been asked quite a few times about what I think of Windows Vista. I must say it is not too shabby, although one of the most annoying “features” is the approach to security. The approach is comically highlighted in the attached advertisement for Macintosh here. The approach is counter productive, and for anyone not familiar with computer security will be become inneffective after 10 or so clicks of “Allow”. It is a flawed model, however Microsoft can put their hands on their hearts and say “we made the PC more secure”.

It is fantastic to see that the Mac ads around Vista are playing almost as frequently as the Vista “WOW” advertisements on Australian television. As I have stated before the “WOW” factor that Microsoft would like for us to see is simply not there with Vista, at least not yet.
There are far too many program compatibility issues and too frequent an update cycle. I have no doubt that in 6 months, after the Service Pack 1 DVD (yes the updates are huge), that Vista will secure its place as the desktop O/S of choice for most of the world. The usual O/S cycle.
I personally will continue to run my copy of Microsoft Vista Ultimate in a virtual machine on the Macintosh and enjoy the best of all three worlds (Mac/Windows/Linux) simultaneously. Unfortunately, due to Microsoft incredulous decision to screw Australian families out of the family discount offered in the United States, and clearly originally intended to be offered in Australia (proof here), my other machines will remain at Windows XP, or become Linux platforms.
